As of the 1940 US census, he had left school and was seeking work but had not yet begun. He enlisted in the US army at Boston on 30 March 1942. His occupation then was noted as "carpenter". He was still single.
He later married Louise F. Sullivan. They had five children.
Richard died in 1992 at age 69.
