Biography

Mary was a Friend (Quaker)
Mary was born on 16th October 1781 at Selby in the county of York, England. She was the daughter of Jonathan Esthill, Master Mariner of Scarborogh and Margaret his wife. Her birth was recorded in the register of the Scarborough Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends, witnessed by Elizabeth Wiley, Mary Procter and Alice Procter.[1][2]

Mary's father Jonathan was listed as a Master Mariner at the time of her birth; he died on 8th June 1783 and was buried in Montego Bay, Jamaica.[3] Mary must have barely known her father. Mary's mother was pregnant at the time; Mary's younger brother Jonathan was born in September 1783 and he died before he was a year old (see his profile for sources and details). Mary's mother Margaret died in 1800 in Gedney, Lincolnshire, when Mary was about 19.

Mary married Joseph Burtt on 15th October 1806 at Spalding and Wainfleet Monthly Meeting, Spalding, Lincoln, England.[4][5] 'On the fifteenth day of the tenth month, one thousand eight hundred and six Joseph Burtt of Welbourn in the County of Lincoln, Grazier, son of Joseph Burtt late of Welbourn aforesaid Grazier, deceased and Alice his wife and Mary Esthill daughter of Jonathan Esthill of Scarborough in the County of York, Merchant and Margaret his wife, both deceased took each other in marriage in a public assembly of the people called Quakers, at Gedney in th'e presence of us Jonathan Huthcinson, Gedney, Grazier, Wm Procter, Selby, Mercht, Joseph Burgess, Spalding, Grazier. This marriage was solemnized between us, Joseph Burtt Mary Esthill.'[6] Mary and Joseph had probably 9 children, between 1807 and 1825.

Mary died aged 43; she was buried at Broughton, Lincolnshire on 25th July 1825.[7][8]
