Biography

Lula Evans, youngest daughter of John F Evans (1861-1942) and his wife, Luanna Jenkins 1868-1942) , farmers, was born in Illinois in 1889. By 1910, the family had moved to Independence, Arkansas.[1][5]

Lula married Walter Gideon Darling (1880-1939) sometime around 1910, and they had four children (Flossie, b. 1910; Charles Walton, b. 1912; Elsie Evelyn, b.1913; and Walter Gideon, Jr. (b. 1914) in as many years. It's not known what happened to the marriage, but it's likely that they divorced. Lula and her children moved over to Union, Arkansas, across town in Newport, where they rented a house at 823 Second Street. Lula took in washing to earn money; her parents, in their 50s, lived with her as well as her brother, John, 33, a lawyer.[2] Walter went on to remarry, as well, before passing away in 1937.

Lula married Dennie Spencer DeFoe in Newport, Arkansas on July 11,1925[3] and Lula and the children moved into Dennie's rented rooms at 106 Bridge Street in Arkansas. Dennie was the owner of a lunch room.[4] By the admission of his family, Dennie was a mean man. His first wife, Minnie, divorced Dennie in 1925 and left with the children, and Dennie married Lula almost immediately. Dennie died in 1937 and Lula moved in with her daughter, who had married Paul Young. They had no children but Paul's mother, Myrtle, also lived with the couple, outside of Union.[5] Paul was a letter carrier for the U.S. mail and both Lula and Myrtle were housekeepers in private homes. Lula died at almost 89 years of age, on November 4, 1978 and is buried at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery in Jonesboro, Arkansas.[6]
