Biography

"James Evans was a missionary of remarkable ability and zeal and of great usefulness among the North American Indians."[1] He was credited with inventing the Cree syllabary. However, although he produced printed material in syllabics, including hymns and parts of the New Testament, many Cree peoples say that Mistanâkôwêw (also known as Calling Badger) from Stanley Mission, Saskatchewan, delivered the writing system to the Cree, not Evans.[2]
