Ann was born in Orford, Lancashire[1] and was christened in Thelwall, Cheshire on 6th February 1820. She is the daughter of
Charles Fairhurst, a bookkeeper and Sarah Mather. [2]
Anne was born and grew up in Thelwall with her parents and siblings. The 1841 census shows Ann Fairhurst (20) a dress maker living on Thelwall Eye with father Charles (40), a millwright, mother Sarah (35) and siblings, William Fairhurst (15) a stone masons apprentice, Charles Fairhurst (15), George Fairhurst (7), Aaron Fairhurst (5), Thomas Fairhurst (3) and James Fairhurst (5 Mo)[3]
Three of Anne’s brothers: James, Joseph and Aaron died from Scarlet fever. They were all buried on the 6th Jan 1848 .[4]
Ann married Thomas Yates on 26th Dec 1855 at Runcorn Parish Church. They were both resident in the Parish of Thelwall at that time. Ann's father, Charles, was described as a farmer and Thomas and his father, John as labourers. The witnesses to the wedding were John Joseph Ablett and John Ward. [5]
The couple had four children. Their first child, Sarah Anne, was christened in Thelwall on 12 April, 1857. Thomas was now a farmer and the couple were living in Orford, Lancashire.[6] Sadly, Sarah Anne only lived a few months and was buried at Thelwall at the beginning of 1858.[7]
By 1861 the couple had another daughter they also called Sarah Ann, Thomas was a farmer of 20 acres employing 3 labourers. They lived in Orford Lane, Orford along with 13 year old niece, Sarah Fairhurst) and Sarah Thompson, an 18 year old general servant.[8]
The 1871 censuse shows they had 2 more children, John born in 1861 and Elizabeth in 1863.[9] John died the following year and by 1881Thomas had become a corn dealer[10]
Her husband Thomas died in 1892, their address was was now Poulton[11] and by 1901 Ann was living with her daughter, Elizabeth and son-in-law, William Wright at Hilton House, Poulton-with-Fearnhead, Padgate, Lancashire.[12]
William Wright died the following year[13] Mother and daughter stayed together but moved to Holly Bank, Stretford Road, Urmston Lancashire where Ann died on 26th May, 1904 aged 83.[14] She was buried with her husband and two of her children at Thelwall, Cheshire on 28th May.[15]

In 1863 Anne is mentioned in her father’s will, she is to receive a quarter share along with her brothers of part of the Estate, the remainder of the Estate is shared equally between his youngest two sons.[citation needed]
