These early years brought all sorts of trials to the settlers at the east end of the Horicon Marsh. To get flour the father had to make a week's trip to Waukesha; to sell wheat he had to drive his oxen fifty miles through woods and over corduroy road to Milwaukee where he received forty cents a bushel for it. His capacity load was forty bushels. "I used to cry for bread,” Mrs. Record told me. "For three weeks one time we had only string beans and milk," and, she added with a slight toss of her head and a sly smile on her lips, "I haven't liked string beans since!"
