Biography
In 1851 Mary was living with her parents and her three illegitimate children at Dunstable Street, Ampthill - George Farmer head married 51 Gentleman's servant born Steppingley, Elizabeth Farmer wife 52 b Ampthill; Mary Farmer dau unmarried 26 Straw plaiter; Ann Farmer dau unmarr 26 Straw plaiter; George Farmer son unmarr 17 Groom; John Farmer son 14 scholar; Elizabeth Groom dau 11 Straw plaiter; William Farmer grandson 6; Edmund Farmer grandson 4; Joseph Farmer grandson 1 Mary's three sons; Ann Farmer granddau 9 mths Ann's dau. All children born Ampthill[1]
The Farmer ancestors were brick and tile makers. For three generations the family business was known as Steppingly Kiln. The Memory of it’s existence is retained in the name of Kiln Farm a smallholding located at the crossroads to the north east of Steppingly village.
