Biography

Charles was baptized 7 September 1856. He was the son of John Farnan and Bridget Gallagher of Beagh, Loughmuck, Omagh. [1]

On 27 July 1911 at St. Mary's R.C. church, Knockmoyle, he married Rose Anne Donnelly of Drummullan, Omagh, daughter of James Donnelly, farmer. Witnessed by Bernard Donnelly and Ellen Angela O'Donnell. [2]

He passed away 11 March 1944 "age 81". [3] He was well-known and popular in the district. The chief mourners at the graveside were: [4]

  • Mrs. Farnan (widow)
  • Mrs R. Simpson (daughter)
  • James Simpson (son-in-law)
  • William, Kathleen and Alice Simpson (grandchildren)
  • Mrs. McCormick, Mrs. Irvine (nieces)
  • John Gallagher, Thomas Gallagher (nephews)
  • Thomas, Joseph and George Simpson, W. Maxwell, Mrs __ Donnelly, Mrs. Geoghegan (relatives)

Research Notes

The age on censuses is some years younger than this baptism. That was extremely common for people of this time and place; they often didn't even know their age as birthdays were not celebrated.

Another possibility could be if the 1856 Charles died young and the same parents had another Charles; although no such baptism seems to be in the Drumragh register (as searched via FMP anyway).

The age at death is "only" 3 years off from the age suggested by baptism. There are no other civil deaths for Charles Farnan before 1944 so that is likely the correct one.

There are many newspaper mentions in Ulster Herald for him selling his farm.
