In 1887 Joseph married Sarah Ann Litt at St John's Church in Workington, Cumberland, England.[4]
The 1911 England and Wales Census shows the couple and three children living in Waterloo by Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England.[5] Joseph was 48 years old and was working as a Marine Engineer.
