George was born about 1839. He was the son of George Ffitch and Emma Peake. George emigrated to New Zealand with his parents and siblings aboard the "Sir George Pollock" in 1851. The vessel departed England on 17 July 1851 and arrived into Lyttelton on 10 November 1851. Father George, is recorded on the passenger list as being aged 40, mother Emma, aged 38 and siblings - Henry (aged 11), Francis (aged 9) and Mary (infant). George is recorded on the passenger list as "George John" and aged 12.
He farmed with his father at Oxford, however, took up a position with the New Zealand Government Railways Service, where he remained for over forty years.
George married Mary Amelia Lawrence in 1862, however, after her death (in 1873), he married Emma Margaret Younghusband (in 1874). Emma Margaret passed away in 1891 and George married again, to Alice Margaret Byrne (in 1906).
He passed away in 1908, aged 67.
