James was born in Derbyshire in 1857 to Briggs and Elizabeth Fish, his mothers maiden name was Hallworth.[1]

He was christened on 29th June 1857 in Whittington, Derbyshire[2]

He was one of seven children. He was a coal miner like his brother Joseph. Joseph was killed in the explosion in the Hyde Lane Pit 18 Jan 1889.
