Josiah drowned Merrie Creek.-off the Yarra River Melbourne. An inquest was held at the Caledonian Hotel in Lonsdale on the 22 January 1845, the day after he had drowned. He was a "painter residing upon the Eastern Hill, and who has left a wife, and four children to lament his loss."[4] "The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death by drowning."" His daughter Sarah is thought to have been born after his death. A son Edmund was born in Manchester, England around 1839.
