Referred to as Captain James Forbes in family genealogies. Possibilities for this title include being a Captain in one of his brothers Army Troops, or being a Captain of a merchant ship, or perhaps fought in one of the European wars.[3]

James Forbes married........Burnet, sister to Burnet of Coweardie, who bore him a son John, writer at Edinburgh. John Forbes was born in 1668, married Sarah Robertson, and left issue:- James (Rev) Forbes born 1700, married Beatrix Campbell, dau of Campbell of Craignish Castle, Argyleshire."
