Biography
Thomas George Forbes was born on 8 Jul 1809 in Devonport, Devon, England to Thomas John Forbes and Eliza.
Thomas George, son of Thomas John & Eliza Forbes, born 8 Jul 1809, was christened on 18 Aug 1809 in Devon.[1]
Thomas George Forbes entered the Royal Navy on 18 May 1822. He became a Lieutenant on 5 Jan 1832 and a Commander on 10 November 1842. From 4 Feb 1850 until about 1853 he was Commander of the Philomel, on the west coast of Africa.[2] His naval career up until 1849 is detailed in "A Naval Biographical Dictionary."[3]
Thomas George Forbes married the widow Elizabeth Dawson (nee Gresley) on 15 May 1856. The marriage was registered in Samford, Suffolk in the second quarter of the year.[4] A marriage notice for Capt Thos George Forbes, son of Lieut General Forbes, & the widow Elizabeth Dawson, daughter of R Gresley esquire, who married on 15 May, was published on 24 May 1856 in the Norfolk Chronicle.[5]
In 1861 Thomas F Forkes [Thomas G Forbes] (age 51, Captain Royal Navy on Half Pay, b Devonport) lived at Old House in Great Horkesley, Lexden, Suffolk with his wife Elizabeth (45, b Kenilworth, Warwickshire), nephew Henry Villiers Forbes (25, Sergant Royal Marine Full Pay, b India), niece Eliza M Forbes Niece (21, Gentlewoman, b N S Wales), and four servants: Josiah Sparkes (24, General Domestic Servant), Amelia Smith (28, Housemaid), Eliza Blake (43, Cook), and Sarah A Cousins (17, Housemaid).[6]
Thomas' wife passed away in 1867:
"24 June [1867]. The Will of Elisabeth Forbes (Wife of Thomas George Forbes Esquire) late of Old House Great Horkesley in the County of Essex deceased who died 18 March 1867 at Old House aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oath of the said Thomas George Forbes of Old House aforesaid one of the Executors. Probate being granted under certain Limitations. Effects under £6,000."[7]
Thomas George Forbes married Anne Eleanora Hallen on 12 Nov 1868 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland.[8] A marriage notice for Rear-Admiral T J[G] Forbes & Anne Eleanora Hallen, daughter of Rev Washington Hallen, was published on 14 Nov 1868 in the Gloucester Journal.[9]
In 1871 Thomas George Forbes (age 61, Rear Admiral Retired) lived at Dunchideock House in Dunchideock, Devon with his wife Anne Eleanora (49).[10]
Thomas George Forbes passed away on 7 Sep 1871, aged 62 years. His death was registered in St Thomas, Devon in the third quarter of the year.[11] An obituary for Rear Admiral Thomas George Forbes, son of General T J Forbes, was published on 8 Sep 1871 in the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette.[12]
"26 September [1871]. The Will of Thomas George Forbes late of Dunchideock House in the County of Devon Esquire Rear-Admiral on the retired List of the Royal Navy who died 7 September 1871 at Dunchideock House was proved at Exeter by Anne Eleanora Forbes of Dunchideock in the said County Widow the Relict and Henry Villiers Forbes of Plymouth in the said County Esquire Captain in the Royal Marine Light Infantry the Nephew the Executors. Effects under £14,000."[13]
