Biography

Charles was born in 1866. He was the son of Charles Ford and Fanny Sproule. He was baptised at Kelston, Somerset, England on 14 November 1866.^[1] He was living with his parents at Walcot, Somerset in 1871^[2] and at Charlcombe, Somerset in 1881.^[3]

He went to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and then joined the Durham Light Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1887. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1889, when he also qualified as an instructor in army signalling, Persian and Pushtu. In 1891 he transferred to the Indian Army. He saw action in British East Africa in 1898. In 1901-2 he was in command a Mule Corps on the NW Frontier of India. In 1904 he became Transport Registration Officer for the NW Province of India. In 1907 he was appointed cantonment magistrate in Hyderabad.

In 1908 he went on sick leave to England, formally retiring in 1911. But at the start of WW1 he volunteered for active service, and was posted as second-in-command to the 11th Battalion of the King's Liverpool Regiment, and then to the Depot of the East Kent Regiment at Canterbury.

He passed away at home in Margate in 1917 and was buried with full military honours at Margate Cemetery.
