Biography

Michael was born about 1549. He is mentioned as the son of James Foxcroft and Elizabeth Woodhead in Dugdale's Visitation of Yorkshire, where he is described as Michael "of Kebroyd".^[1]

He was born at Sowerby in the parish of Halifax and may have lived there at first after his marriage, as two children were baptised there of Michael Foxcroft "of Sourbie" in 1572 and 1575: James 14 August 1572 and Michael 23 January 1574/1575.^[2] He seems to have moved to Kebroyd about 1576 as all further baptisms are at Elland, where he is described as "of Soyland" which included the Kebroyd area. The following children were baptised at Elland between 1577 and 1588 - Grace, Judith, Mary, Sarah, Samuel, and Dinah.^[3]

Will of a Michael Foxcroft of Halifax proved 4 October 1610.^[5] Not sure if this is the correct one - there was a burial of a Michael Foxcroft at Halifax 30 April 1610 (drowned in the river Calder) which probably goes with this, and he is said to be of Warley not Kebroyd. However, Michael seems to have owned land in various places as well as Kebroyd so wouldn't rule it out.
