John was born in December of 1854 in Mississippi.[1]

A resident of Union County, Mississippi in 1880,[2] John has moved by 1900 when he appears on the census in Smith County, Texas with the following household:

  1. George Irvin[3] Franklin was born 15[3]June 1880 in Union County,[3] Mississippi.[2][1] He died in Turnertown, Rusk County, Texas on 13 Aug 1947.[3]
  2. Wardie[4] William Franklin was born in Mississippi 05[4] May 1886[1] and died 31 Jul 1940 in Commerce, Hunt County, Texas.[4]
  3. Charles E. "Charlie" Franklin was born in Mississippi in September of 1890.[1][5]
  4. David I. Franklin was born in Mississippi in October of 1892.[1][5]
  5. Grover Franklin was born in Texas in June of 1895.[1] He apparently died young, before 1910.[5][6]
  6. Walton O. Franklin was born in Texas in February of 1898.[1] He apparently died young, before 1910.[5][6]
  7. Terra V. Franklin was born in Texas about 1904.[5][7] Terra was unmarried and living in San Angelo, Texas in 1934 as she was the informant on her brother Alvis' death certificate.[8]
  8. Jack[8] Alvis Franklin was born in Texas[5][7] 13 Aug 1905 and died 07 Jan 1934 in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas.[8] He was buried in Belvedere Cemetery.[8]
  9. Mary Catherine Franklin was born in Texas about 1908.[5][7]

His first wife was Mollie Greenwood[2][4] who died sometime before 1910[5]. He then married Lora J. Geiger on 01 Sep 1903 in Smith County, Texas.[9]

John died 17 Jan 1911 in Smith County[6] and wife Lora appears with the younger children on that census as widowed.[7] His obituary appears in the Tyler, Texas newspaper:

J. W. Franklin Died last night at one o'clock. Burial at Ebenezer Cemetery. Survived by wife and seven children. Native of Mississippi. Came to Arp several years ago. Member of Baptist church and superintendent of Sunday School.[6]
