Biography

William Franklin served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 8 Jun 1861

William Edward Franklin was born in Bedford, Virginia December 14, 1831, parents John Franklin and Martha Jane Anderson, one of perhaps a dozen children.

Mother Martha passed away in 1846, and in the 1850 census of Pittsylvania, Virginia, it was shown father John had remarried, and 9 of Martha's children were in the home, including William and Thomas.

William and Thomas Cook Franklin would both enter the Civil War, enlisting on June 8, 1861 in Campbell County, Virginia. They would both be in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, Company I. William would achieve rank of 3rd Sergeant.

William Edward Franklin is recorded as on active duty through October of 1862. In April of 1863, he became ill, and died of pneumonia. Brother Thomas Cook Franklin made it through the war but passed away in 1871.
