Biography

Bertha (Freed) Daugherty has German Roots.

Bertha, daughter of William H. Freed and Louise A. McCoy, was born 28 January 1879 in York County, Pennsylvania.[1] In 1880 the household in West Manchester Township included her parents William (age 29, teacher and gardener) and Louisa A. Freed (31), Bertha F. (1), her sister Mable E. (2) and a servant Amanda Gross (11).[2]

Before 1900 William (age 49, farmer) and Louisa Freed (52) had moved with their children Mable E. (23, teacher), Bertha F. (21), Charles Wesley (18) and Hattie Grace (16) to York Township, York County.[1]

On 26 August 1909 in York County, she married George Clinton Daugherty,[3] son of Van Buren Daugherty and Barbara Ellen Eberly.[citation needed] They had one daughter:

  • Esther Romaine Daugherty (b. 1912;[4] m. Rev. Joshua Temple Jarrell;[5][6] d. 25 October 2009).[4][5][6] At least three sons and one daughter.[5][6]

As a minister's wife, Bertha moved frequently as her husband's assignments changed. In 1910 George C. (age 26, minister at W. B. Church) and Bertha F. Daugherty (31) lived in Fannett Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.[7] Before 1920 they had moved to Hampstead, Carroll County, Maryland, where the household included George C. (age 36, Lutheran minister), Bertha F. (40) and Esther R. Daugherty (7).[8] Before 1935, George C. (age 56) and Bertha Daugherty (57) returned to York County, settling in Hanover.[9] The record shows that George had completed four years of college and Bertha had graduated from high school.[9]

Bertha died 7 May 1960 in York County and buried at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hanover, York County.[10]
