James was born about 1806 in Crowle, Lincolnshire, England.[1]
James married Mary Ann Armitage by licence in 1834 in Eastrington, Yorkshire.[2] At the time of the 1851 census the family lived in Newport in the parish of Gilberdyke, Yorkshire, where James was a butcher and farmer.[1]
