Ilon was born in 1924. He was the son of Frederick Funderburg and Ethyl Westmoreland.
He attended Rutgers University graduate school, being the first black graduate. In 1950, he married Rosemary Fitts in St. Alphonsus Church, Durham, NC.[1]
Known as "I.Owen" Funderburg, he was credited with saving Citizens Trust Bank by transforming a loss of $1.5 million in 1975, when he became president, to assets of $115 million when he retired as CEO in 1992. At the time of his death in 2002, the bank had assets of $295 million. [2] Owen also served as director of the Georgia World Congress center and the Underground Festival board. In addition, he was a member of the Atlanta Business Hall of Fame.
He passed away in 2002.
Owen's oldest brother, 1Lt. Frederick Funderburg, was a Tuskegee airman who died while on a mission in Italy. He continues to be Missing in Action
