Hector was a North Melbourne fruit merchant. He was once convicted, apparently trying to help out one of his suppliers, as reported in "Weekly Times" on Saturday 22nd June 1940.
For having, contrary to the National Security Act, taken into his possession a quantity of apples belonging to the Commonwealth, Hector Gabriel, of Victoria Street, North Melbourne, was fined £7, with £2/2/ costs, at North Melbourne Court. Henry S. Bird, officer of the Commonwealth Investigation Branch, said that on April 17 he seized a quantity of apples at Gabriel's premises. Gabriel told him that a Mr Millburn had given him the apples. Bird said Milburn had been charged with an offence against the Apple and Pear Acquisition Regulations. Mr J. Moloney (for Gabriel) said his client was a Greek, and had been to Australia for about 17 years. Mr Pyvis P.M. said it could be presumed that Gabriel had intended to dispose of the fruit in the way of business. Mornington Peninsula fruitgrowers are reported to be taking action to have non-growers replaced by growers in the packing end handling of fruit sent from the cool stores. This procedure, it is claimed, will enable growers and their families to carry on through the winter months, and thus avoid serious hardships which must otherwise be involved. [2]
In 1946, Hector Denis Gabriel advertised his intention to apply to become an Australian citizen in "The Argus" on Monday 8th April 1946.
Hector Gabriel died on 5th May 1957 at Pascoe Vale, Victoria, Australia. [4]
He was buried on 8th May 1957 in Fawkner Memorial Park, Fawkner, Victoria, Australia. [5]
He left a will on which probate was granted on 22nd August 1960. [6]
