of Death

Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth, Vic. : 1855 - 1955) Sat 7 Sep 1912 Page 2 OBITUARY.

There passed away on Friday, 30th August, at his youngest son's residence, Camberwell, after a day or two's illness, Andrew Love Galbraith, who will be remembered by early residents of Beechworth as an esteemed townsman in the sixties and early seventies. His first place of business was in Ford-street, on the site of Mr. J. Armstrong's present premises, where he carried on the business of baker and pastrycook. He after wards removed to Newtown, where he remained until 1875, when, with his wife and family, consisting of five sons and two daughters, he took up a large selection near the Tyers River, in Gippsland, six miles from the town of Traralgon, then in its infancy. Gippsland was only just beginning to be opened up, being almost a terra incognita to the rest of the colony, settlement in which required a stout heart and considerable capital to make any impression on the almost impenetrable forests which covered most of the land, tracks having to be cleared before advance was possible. Mr. Galbraith was accompanied by Mr. John Ross (his wife's father), who was for some years pastor of the Baptist Church in Beechworth, and whose trade (that of a carpenter) added much to the comfort and efficiency of the pioneers who were also accompanied by and Mrs. Wm. Duncan (who established the business in Beechworth now carried on by Mr. D. Canfield) and Mr. Robert Tucker, for many years assistant to Mr. James Ingram, stationer; All of the families selected land in the same locality, making slow but steady progress, the soil responding to cultivation in a marvelous manner. The task, however, was too strenuous for Mr. Tucker, who was not a young man, and his family too young to materially help him, and he died within two years. Mr. Galbraith having the assistance, of his sons, made a comfortable home, and established a dairy herd which made a name for itself all, over the surrounding districts, and the property is still held and worked by his sons. The whole family are held in the highest esteem by all who have the privilege of their acquaintance. Mr. Galbraith will long be remembered. He died in the full assurance of a resurrection to eternal life at the return of Christ to the earth. Mr. Ross died at the age of 98 some years ago.
