Biography

Flag of Gloucestershire (adopted 2008)
Henry Garn was born in the Town of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.

Henry was born around 1829, and baptized on the 16 August 1829 at Cheltenham Minster (aka St Mary's), 44 Clarence Street, in the spa Town of Cheltenham, on the small river Chelt, on the edge of the Cotswolds in the county of Gloucestershire, England[1]. He was the baseborn son of single woman, Maria (Garn) and his father wasn't recorded. In 1841, Henry lived with the Garn family—Tailor, John (70), John (14), Sarah (45) and Thomas and John (Jenkins) at Yew Tree Cottage, in the Town of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England[2]. However, by 1851, he is a Prisoner in the County Jail at North Hamlet in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. At the time, his occupation is recorded as being a Hawker of Cutlery[3].

Before being sentenced to Transportation in 1851, 20 year old Henry was previously convicted of Larceny on the 23 March 1847 at the Gloucestershire County Sessions in Gloucester and sentenced to hard labour for 12 months[4]. Then, on the 29 March 1851, at the age of 23, he was convicted of "stealing from the person of Josiah Jones a purse and seven pounds in silver" and sentenced to 10 years Transportation. At the time of his imprisonment on the 11 January 1851, Henry was described as being 5 feet 2 inches tall with a fresh complexion, sandy hair and brown eyes. His distinguishing marks were noted as being a tattoo portraying a "Cross, Anchor, heart, M.M." on his lower left arm[5]. After being removed to Gloucester Gaol, he spent 8 months there, before being transferred to Wakefield Gaol, in Yorkshire, for 4 months. On the 9 March 1852, Henry was taken to Portland Prison in Dorset to await Transportation and on the 23 April 1852 embarked in the convict ship "William Jardine" for Western Australia, arriving there on the 1 August 1852[6].

Passengers—Captain Foss, staff officer of Pensioners, lady, four children, and neice; Mr Barr, religious instructor; Dr Donnet, surgeon superintendent. 212 convicts, and 29 pensioners, with their wives and families[7].

Henry (Garn) married Mary Carnaghan on the 7 April 1860 in the Town of York, situated on the Avon River, 97 kilometres (60 mi) east of the capital Perth in the Wheatbelt Region, of Western Australia. At the time of the marriage, Henry was 32 years old and Mary, just 21. His father was recorded as being "Henry Garn" and Mary's father as Robert (Canaharn)[8][9]. Six (6) children were born to the couple:--

  1. Mary Ann Maria Garn Baldock, born 1861 in York, Western Australia[10].
  2. Robert Henry Garn, born 1863 in Guildford. Bap. 11 October 1863 in Perth, Western Australia[11][12].
  3. Sophia Jane Garn Chapman, born 1865 in Perth, Western Australia[13].
  4. Emily Garn Davies, born 1867 in Perth, Western Australia[14].
  5. Louisa Garn Guthrie
  6. Edith Mabel Garn Allen, born 1874 in Perth, Western Australia[15].

After Mary's passing in 1878, Henry married Catherine (Counsel) on the 8 September 1888 at the Wesleyan Church, corner Market and Cantonment Streets, in Fremantle, Western Australia[16]. The couple had one (1) daughter:--

  1. Madeline Grace Garn, born 1889 in Perth, Western Australia[17].

Henry died, at the age of 54, at 6.00 p.m. on the 10 November 1891 as a result of suicide by shooting himself with a revolver, after shooting his wife, Catherine (Counsel/Garn) at a Boarding House in Henry Street, in the town of Fremantle, Western Australia[18]. According to a newspaper report at the time, Henry had a note in his pocket that read:--Let this be a warning to wives running their husbands into debt, and running away from them to cohabit with other men, as mine has done. I am 54, and my wife is 45.[19]. His burial took place on the 12 November 1891 at the East Perth Cemetery, Bronte Street, East Perth, in the City of Perth, Western Australia[20].

  • 1891 'TRAGEDY AT FREMANTLE.', The West Australian (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954), Wednesday 11 November, p. 2.
  • TRAGEDY AT FREMANTLE. ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE. Henry street, Fremantle, was yesterday the scene of great excitement and consideration when it became known that a terrible tragedy had been enacted in the vicinity. At about a quarter past ten o'clock, when the business of that usually brisk thoroughfare was in full swing, those living adjacent to a boarding house kept by Mrs. Garn, situated nearly opposite the Fremantle club, were alarmed to hear the reports of several shots from the rear of the premises.
  • The first to enter the house were Mr. Jas. and Constable Harrington who had been summoned by one of Mrs. Garn's sons immediately after the occurrence. On going through the passage which runs from the front entrance door into the kitchen, a horrible spectacle was met with. On the kitchen floor, weltering in a pool of blood, and still breathing, lay Henry Daniel Garn, a talior lately carrying on business in Perth. In the bedroom adjoining the kitchen Mrs. Garn whose face and dress were covered with blood, was being supported by her son Henry Counsel.......
  • Garn's wounds which bore all the signatures of having been self-inflicted were of a much more serious nature. He had fired two shots to the head, only one of which had taken effect. The bullet entered his mouth, and so far as can be ascertained, penetrated downwards into the cheek. By the left hand of the murderer and suicide was found a small " British Bulldog" revolver, covered with blood, and which had been discharged in four chambers, and in his pocket was a box of cartridges, from which his revolver had evidently been charged, and has since been assertained, he had only that morning purchased from a store in Fremantle......
  • The motive which prompted the committal of the act does not seem very clear, but such information as can be gleaned points to domestic infidelity of long standing having been the principal cause. About twelve months ago Garn and his wife separated, he carrying on a tailor's shop in Perth, and the wife afterwards going into the hospital as a nurse. The family consisted of six grown-up sons and a daughter of tender age, the majority of them being by the former husband......
  • Whatever may have been the motive which urged him on to attempt murder and suicide, it would seem that the act was premeditated.....
  • Garn died from the effect of his injuries at six o'clock yesterday evening. The inquest will be opened at eleven o'clock this morning[21].
  • 1891 'Family Notices', The West Australian (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954), Thursday 12 November, p. 4.
  • FUNERAL NOTICE. GARN. — The FUNERAL of the late HENRY DANIEL GARN will leave his late residence, Howick-street, at Half-past Three o'clock THIS AFTERNOON. Friends will please accept this intimation. A. LEE, Undertaker[22].
