Biography

Ira Gerry was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts, in 1806, the youngest of eight children born to Capt. David Gerry and his wife Sally. ^[1] He was 9 months old when his father died.

He married Paulina Gerry in 1832, the daughter of Robert Gerry of Malden, Massachusetts.^[2] She was an abolitionist and the secretary of the Stoneham Female Anti-Slavery Society.[1]

Ira was a merchant and manufacturer of shoes. He was also active in town politics, serving as assessor, selectman, overseer of the poor, and a member of the school committee over the years. The represented Stoneham in the State legislature in 1835. He was justice of the peace for many years and also an insurance agent, as well as a treasurer of the Stoneham Savings Bank for many years.^[3]

Ira and his wife had no children. They lived in Stoneham throughout their lives. He died when he was 69 years old.^[4] He is buried at the Lindenwood Cemetery in Stoneham.^[5]
