OWNER OF FURNITURE FIRM, SIMON GEVURTZ, SUCCUMBS

Simon Gevurtz, 69, who came to Portland as a young man from his native Poland and who was identified with the furniture business in the city more than 40 years, died Friday in a hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Gevurtz was born in Lublin, Poland, September 15, 1885. He established the S. Gevurtz Furniture company in Portland in 1914 and remained president of the company until his death.

During his long residence in Portland he was active in organizational and philanthropic work. He participated actively in the Congregation Neveh Zedek synagogue, the Rose City lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was an honorary member of Boys Town, and of the Portland chapter of the City of Hope, of which he was the organizer.

He leaves the widow Bertha Gevurtz, at the family home, 7230 SE Reed College place; two daughters, Mrs. Esther Schick and Mrs. Martha York; two sons, Harold A. and Marvin M. Gevurtz; two sisters, Mrs. Sophie Sugarman and Mrs. Sarah Zusman; and eight grandchildren. All live in Portland.

The funeral will be Monday at 11 am in the chapel of Edward Holman & Son, with Rabbi Phillip Kleinman of Congregation Neveh Zedek synagogue officiating. Interment will be in Rose City Lodge cemetery.
