Robert was born in 1883. He was the son of David Ghormley. He passed away in 1958.
Robert was a distinguished World War II US Navy Vice Admiral who is most remembered as commander of South Pacific Force and Area during the Battle of Guadalcanal, codenamed Operation Watchtower by American forces, fought between 7 August 1942 and 9 February 1943 on and around the island of Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater. It was the first major land offensive by Allied forces against the Empire of Japan.
