Biography

James H. was born in 1854. He married Ella Osborn in 1881. He passed away in 1917. A findagrave memorial is available.

James's son Lonnie married Jesse Ledbetter. I visited with Jessie and she said that "Ada Aker’s mother in law was an Aunt of Ethel Smalley." Since Ethel’s father was James H. Gibson. A Gibson aunt would be James's sister. I looked through the census and found Belle, Ada Aker's mother in law, and a hoped for clue to James's parents.

Ada (Ethel Gibson's husband's half sister) married Elmer C. Akers. The 1900 census, Nevada,Vernon Co. MO, records Elmer's mother. She is Belle, born Oct 1856 in Illinois. Her parents were from back east. So, Belle, was the mother-in-law. An 1877 marriage record in Vernon Co. MO shows Wm James B. Akers married Louisa Narriseic Gibson at the home of Martin Kimber. I conclude that Louisa became Bell after her marriage to Wm. Akers. A Vernon Com marriage record 27 Feb 1870 shows that Martin Kimber married Nancy M. Gibson. I conclude that Nancy Gibson was an older sister of Louisa and by my informants clue, they were both sisters of James H. Gibson. So, now I have some family and rough location.

Census of Box Twp Cedar Co. MO in 1860 is a match for James H. with a sister Nancy. The census has Sarah a widow born in KY age 40. She has children Mary 19 b. KY, John N. 15 b. MO, Nancy M. 12 b. MO, James H. 10 b. MO Henry J. 8 b. MO and Louisa 5 born MO. I claim this census for James H. because it also has Louisa and Nancy. The census tells the mother was Sarah.

In Jan 2020, I found a match in the 18 Sep 1850 census District 16, Clinton Co. MO. John Gibson 29 b. KY, Sally 30 b. KY (Sally is another name for Sarah). Children were George 10 b. KY, Mary 8, b. KY, John 5, b. MO, Nancy 2, b. MO and James 2/12 b. MO. I have a new date for James's birth and I now have names for his parents.

Big bonus was that in the line ahead of John in 1850, there was A Gibson 55 b. North Carolina, Nancy 55 b. Tennessee, Lucy 17 b. Tennessee and Hiram 15 b. Tennessee. There is a HIram Gibson age 36 in 1870 Vernon Co. MO census, born in KY, wife Louisa, Married Boone Co. MO 1864 - This may be a clue.

When I looked in Kentucky, I found A 39 year old John Gibson appearing in the Mortality census of Graves Co. KY in early 1860. He was married. He died May 1860 (which is before the MO census where Sarah was a widow)

The mortality census pointed to the 1840 census of Graves Co. KY where I found John Gibson 20-30 and wife same. They have a son under five. I see a Leadbetter family, but no other identified Gibsons nearby.
