Death of A Pioneer, John W. Gilbert Passes Away at Deer Lodge,
"News was received yesterday of the death of John W. Gilbert of Deer Lodge. Mr. Gilbert's death was due to pneumonia. Mr. Gilbert was a pioneer of Deer Lodge County, having come to this section in the early days. He was well known and highly esteemed. He was a man of the highest honor and integrity and was of a lovable disposition. There are none who knew Mr. Gilbert who will not be pained at the announcement that he has passed away.
Mr. Gilbert was a veteran of the Civil War and had the distinction of having served in the regiment of which President McKinley was then an officer.
He was at one time a business partner of the late Peter Patterson, also a well–known old–timer. The two engaged in contracting. Of late Mr. Gilbert operated the stage line between Coloma, Garnet, and Bearmouth.
