John was born on 13 Apr 1887 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. He was the son of William Hastings Gillespie and Mary Osborn.
AT the age of 26 on 18 May 1913 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia to Margaret 'Maggie' Catherine Dwyer. Together they had 6 children:
