Chester was convicted of murdering Grace Mae Brown on 11 Jul 1906 at Big Moose Lake, Herkimer County, New York. Grace was pregnant with Chester's child at the time of her death. Chester was executed in the electric chair at Auburn Prison on 30 Mar 1908 at the age of 24.
The story of the murder and subsequent trial was the basis for Theodore Dreiser’s best-selling novel An American Tragedy, which spawned the 1951 movie A Place in the Sun, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters and Montgomery Clift.

Any source for his middle name? My Ellsworth family came directly from Yorkshire to Cortland, NY in 1852, but I don't see any Ellsworths in his ancestry.
My apologies, allow me to rephrase that... I was curious as to why his middle name was Ellsworth. I was looking for connections. I have been told that Ellsworth was a popular name shortly after the Civil War, thanks to Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth. Perhaps that is all it was. Sorry for the confusion.
No worries -- I don't have any info on where or how he got the name. My great aunt married Chester's younger brother Paul and they had no children, so I haven't spent much time with his family line. And I only discovered Chester after my great aunt, grandmother, and mother took this "family secret" to their graves. None of them ever spoke a word of Chester. His family had strong ties to NY so it's entirely possible he was named for Gen. EEE -- I've seen more than a few ancestors of the late 19th / early 20th century named for famous people.
