Adam was born in 1817 in Erbes-Büdesheim near Alzey (Worms). Adam Gimbel migrated to America in 1834 and travelled to Vincennes, Indiana, USA.[1] He was in Philadelphia by 1870.[2][3]
Adam Gimbel opened his first department store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1887. His sons opened a second store in Philadephia, and later another store in Manhattan. Gimbels was at one time the largest department store retail corporation in the world.[4]
Personal Life
In 1847, he married Fridolyn Kehn-Weiler; they had fourteen children, eleven of whom lived to adulthood. His seven sons, Jacob, Ellis, Isaac, Charles, Louis, Daniel, and Benedict, all worked in the family business. Every family business meeting was opened by a reading from the Book of Proverbs.
He passed away June 28, 1896 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, United States.[5] He was buried June 30, 1896, in Mt. Sinai Cemetery.[6][7][8]
