Biography

Jennie (aka “Jay") Glassgold was born September 1895 in New York, NY, a daughter of Samuel Glassgold and Ida Rothenberg. [1] [2] [3]

Jennie’s mother Ida died of “Puerperal Depticaemia” [Septicaemia?] on 17 Feb 1899, with burial that same day in Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. At the time of her death, she resided at 2937 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. [4] [5] Samuel Glassgold then married Ida’s younger sister Minnie. [6] [7]

We find Jennie Glassgold first in public records on 4 June 1900. The federal census of 1900, listed for Brooklyn Ward 26 on 4 June, found this family: Samuel Glassgold, head, age 32 (born March 1868 in Russia), employed in mattress manufacturing; wife Minnie, age 20 (born July 1879 in Russia). Both indicated that they had been married for zero years. The two children present were Samuel’s daughter Jinnie, age 4 (born September 1895 in New York; and his son “Harry”, age 1 (born February 1899 in New York). By the dates and ages, this child Harry appears to be Adolph Glassgold. [Was this an early nickname, or an error by the census taker?] Both Jinnie and Adolph were the children of Ida, who had died shortly after giving birth to Adolph.[8] Thus, they were Minnie's niece and nephew as well as her step-children.

In 1915, when the New York State census was listed for Centerville Village, town of Fallsburgh, Sullivan County, NY, on 1 June, she was at home with her father and step-mother (who was also her aunt) and siblings. Present were Sam Glassgold, age 48, born in Russia, who was occupied in the “furniture business”; his wife Minnie, age 33, also born in Russia; his daughter Jennie (by first wife Ida), 19; his son Adolph (by first wife Ida), 16; son George, 14; and son Burnhart, 10. All the children were born in the USA.[9]

Jennie Glassgold married William Dorfman 15 November 1915 in Bronx, New York. [10]

The federal census of 1920, listed for the 19th Assembly District, Borough of Manhattan, on 2 January, found this family at 201 W. 118th Street. William’s mother Esther Dorfman, age 53 and widowed, was renting the apartment. With her were son William, age 33, who was a musician in an orchestra and daughter-in-law Jinnie, who was 24. William’s sisters also residing there were Ray, age 29, and Frieda, 27. Also present was a boarder, William Frankman, age 28. [11]

The 1930 federal census, listed for the borough of Manhattan, Assembly District 22, on 25 April, found this family at 610 W. 152nd Street (Hamilton Heights): William Dorfman, head, age 43; wife Jinnie, age 34 and born in Connecticut; son Earl was 13. They were renting an apartment for one hundred dollars monthly. [Unfortunately, the inscriptions on this census listing page are very faint, preventing a grasp of all the other facts recorded.][12]

When the 1940 federal census was listed for the Borough of Manhattan, Assembly District 15, on 25 April, this family was at 755 Madison Avenue, in an apartment rented for fifty dollars monthly: William Dorfman, head, was age 53, born in Russia, and employed as a musician; wife Jennie was 45, born in Connecticut. (William and Jinnie had lived in this current place five years earlier.) Their son Earl was age 23, born in New York, and had lived five years earlier in Blairstown, New Jersey; he was employed as a commercial artist. [13]
