Lt Col Harvest Commandant wrote to His Excellency the Governor on 17 August 1874 regarding the family of Daniel Shinners late of the East India Company @9d per day who died in the hospital of a liver complaint. He had been living at the Mt Eliza Barracks with 6 of his children as he had left his wife in Kojonup and she had run off with ‘a low ticket-of-leave man names Ford’ and was living with him in Albany. His cottage and land at Kojonup had been made over to Mr HS Parker in payment of debts. His eldest child Michael was employed sheep herding up the country the second son James is apprenticed to Mr Randall. He recommended the third son John Thomas be employed by the telegraph office saying he had had 2 years at the Roman Catholic school in Perth and 3 years at Kojonup. The eldest daughter could get employment in some family. He recommended that the youngest boy and two youngest girls be admitted to the Roman Catholic orphanage which was done. Kate Shinners aged 9 years 8 months and Margaret Shinners aged 7 years were admitted to the RC Orphanage on 29th September 1877 Kate was sent out to service in Perth on October 1881 and Margaret was sent to her mother in November 1881
