John Ralph Goates "Goatie", age 86 of Lehi, Utah passed away June 8, 2004 of natural causes.

He was born Sept. 21, 1918 in Lehi, Utah to John and Winnifred Glover Goates.

He married Angela (Angie) Mary Clutter on May 11, 1946 in Reno, NV.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and retired a military officer as a Major having served in the South Pacific Theatre, Deseret Chemical, Japan, Dugway Proving Grounds and the Yuma Test Station in Arizona.

He was an avid reader of Western Americana, Utah History and the settling of the West. He also had a love of Indian lore and Native American History. He was a volunteer guide at the Hutching's Museum. He enjoyed minerals, gems, rocks, and gardening he learned from his father and grandfather.

He loved to take his children fishing, hunting, and exploring the desert. He had a great sense of humor and loved taking trips to see natural wonders, landscape, and share his knowledge of geology and historic places.

Survived by his wife, Angie; one daughter, Lorraine "Laura" Goates; three sons, Robert (Karen) Goates, John Dennis Goates, Glen A. Goates; two grandsons, Robby Lee and Andrew Goates; one sister, Ruth Wing.

Preceded in death by his parents; a son, Anthony "Tony" Scott Goates; two sisters, Thelma Webb and Edith Singleton; and one brother, Blaine Goates.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 12, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in the Lehi City Cemetery, 400 E. 1100 N.

Family and friends may call at the Wing Mortuary, 118 E. Main, Lehi, on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services.

Military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
