Ambrose was born in 1727. He was the son of Ambrose Goddard and Elizabeth Awdry. He was educated at Winchester College. He had a brother Thomas who, like Ambrose, became an MP.[1]

He lived in Swindon, Wiltshire.

He married Sarah Williams, daughter of Reverend Thomas Williams, on 16 August 1776. They had 3 sons and 7 daughters (and employed noted diarist Agnes Porter as a governess) including:

He was Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Wiltshire between 1772 and 1806.

He passed away in 1815.
