James was born in 1863. He is the son of Patrick Gunning and Catherine Whelan. ^[1]

James married Mary Ann Murnane at St. Josephs Chruch Warrnambool on 15 Apr 1891 ^[2]

James' last residence is list as Camperdown, Victoria.

MR. JAMES GOONAN. A death which caused very general regret occurred on June 14th, when Mr. James Goonan, of Newminster Park, Camperdown, passed away after a short illness. The late Mr. Goonan, who was 56 years of age, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Goonan, of Manifold-street, Colac, and went to Newminster Park some seven years ago, and had resided there since. Prior to that Mr. Goonan lived at Glenormiston, and still earlier at Allansford and Nirranda, where he followed farming pursuits. He was of a generous disposition, and ever ready to lend a helping hand to a good cause, and his demise will be very deeply regretted. He leaves a widow and family of five sons and three daughters to mourn their irreparable loss, and for whom universal sympathy will be felt. The sons are Messrs. Daniel, Augustine, Joseph, Louis, and Cornelius, and the daughters Misses Agnes, Stella, and Anastasla. R.I.P.
