Biography

Margaret Gourlay was born on 2 December 1841^[1] at Ceres, Fife, Scotland to Thomas Gourlay and Magdalene Webster. She was Christened on 15 August 1843^[2] in Ceres, Fife, Scotland. Thomas Gourlay was recorded as an Inn Keeper.

She was living in 1851 with her parents in Ceres^[3].

She was living in 1861 with her parents in the Volunteer's Pub in Ceres^[4].

She married David Grubb on 4 July 1862^[5] and had two children in Scotland, George Grubb^[6] and Thomas Gourlay Grubb^[7] before they left to come to Auckland on the ship Albert William which left London on 10 August 1864 and arriving in Auckland on 5 December 1864^[8][9].

They were living in Karangahape Road, Auckland in 1886 when their youngest child Elizabeth died in July 1886^[22].

Her husband David died in 1902.

Margaret died on 19 March 1931^[23] at the residence of her Daugther Janet McCown at Titirangi road, New Lynn, Auckland. She was survived by four sons and three daughters^[24]. She had 23 Grandchildren and 29 Great grandchildren.

She was buried with her Husband David and Daughter Janet Grubb on 20 March 1931 in Symonds street Cemetery^[25].

Her will was probated in Auckland^[26] assigning Charles Grubb as the trustee with Janet McCown receiving Bedding, Crockery and Pictures that were at her house and the residual shared between Magdalene, Janet, Barbara, William, Charles and Archibald or their heirs.
