Jonathan was born in 1682 to parents, John and Mary Gove and was named for a brother, Jonathan, who had passed away the previous year. The Massachusetts records show Jonathan Gove, born 19 January 1677 and died 11 October 1681.

In the 1600's, it was very important to the early settlers to work the land in order to "improve" the worth of the land. These settlers were taxed on the worth of their improved land, the types of crops they grew, livestock, and any buildings they might have constructed. On the danger end of this equation were the Natives. If the settlers inadvertently crossed over into land that was not bartered for, the crops could be destroyed, the buildings burned and unfortunately lives would be lost. Europeans did not understand the Native concept of peaceful "non-ownership" of land. Natives did not understand European concepts of "land ownership".
