Biography

Richard Gower was born on the 1st of October 1777, in New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine.^[1] He was the fourth child, of the six, born to Joshua Gower and Elizabeth (Witham) Gower. Richard married Betsy Wing^[2] before May of 1801,^[3] most likely in Maine.

In the year 1810 Richard was living in Wayne, Kennebec, Maine. He had one teenage daughter, four children under ten, and his wife in the household.^[4] Richard was on the list of Constables and Collectors in Wayne,^[5] as well as on the list of merchants.^[6] By 1820 Richard was still living in Wayne, with a family size of five.^[7] His son Stanley had been born four years previous;^[8] but had died at the tender age of five months, and so was not shown on the census. In the household with Richard and his wife was one male age ten to fifteen (Lewis 14), one female under ten (Elizabeth 9), and one female sixteen through twenty-five (Louisa 19 or Mary 17).

Richard lived to the age of seventy-seven, taking his last breath on the 7th of September 1854.^[9] He was laid to rest in the Eastern Cemetery, in Portland, Cumberland, Maine.^[10]

Research Notes

• In 1810, Richard was on the list of Constables and Collectors in Wayne, Kennebec, Maine.^[11] He was further listed as a merchant in Wayne between the years 1810 and 1820.^[12]
