OBITUARY - Windsor & Richmond Gazette - 6 Jun 1896

Death of Mr. E. Grace.

ON Tuesday evening last an old and respected resident of the Hawkesbury District passed away at his late home, at Riverstone, in the person of Mr Edmond Grace. Mr Grace had been ailing for some time, and was under the medical care of Dr Max-Sully. Little hopes were entertained of his recovery, and consequently his most intimate friends were prepared to hear of his demise at almost any moment. The deceased gentleman was for over 30 years a member of the New South Wales police force, and during nearly the whole of this period he was stationed in this district. Prior to entering the force he was for 12 years a Sergeant in the 12th Regiment, the regiment identical with that with which the late Major Hill was associated. It was at the expiration of this period that he joined the police force, somewhere about the year 1860. After being stationed for a brief while at Parramatta, he was transferred to Rouse Hill, where he remained for a great number of years, leaving there for Riverstone when a police station was established there some time since. As a police officer he was always highly spoken of, not only by the general public, but by his comrades, all of whom entertained a very kindly feeling and the very highest of esteem for him. Senr-Constable. McNeely, of Richmond, who joined the force about 18 months after the late Mr Grace, was for many long years closely associated with him in the con duct of official duties in this district; and Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick who became acquainted with Mr Grace 27 years ago, both speak highly of the deceased gentleman's very excellent qualities of head and heart. About four years ago Mr Grace retired from the force, and settled down in Riverstone, where he continued to reside until the time of his death. He made hosts of friends on all sides, who deeply regret his demise. Mr Grace leaves a widow and grown-up family. Two daughters are married, the eldest to Mr McDermott, of Orange, and another to Mr M Stabuck, of the same place.

The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, being conducted by Messrs T Collison and Son. The remains were conveyed to St Matthew's R.C. Church, where a special service was conducted by Rev Father Hayes.

The cortege was an exceedingly extended one, and included residents from all parts of the district, despite the fact that the day was unpleasantly wet and the distance to be travelled long. The pall-bearers were Messrs W C Barker, W Moses, P Butler, S Ryan, J Walsh, and J Nagle, and the coffin was covered with beautiful wreaths, which came from Messrs Terry, Rouse, Searle, and others who had known the deceased. Subsequently the cortege moved to the cemetery, where the last rites of burial were consummated. The deceased was 65 years of age.
