Johann Georg Graeff (John George Graeff)

(1762 - 1829) Johann Georg was also known as John George Graeff was born in Metz and studied music with Abel and then with Haydn. In 1784 he went to London where he appeared as a flute soloist in concerts organised by Salomon for the Gentry & Nobility at the Assembly Rooms in Hannover Square. He became friends with the composer Samuel Wesley and with Clementi under whose guidance he became a master of pianoforte and by which he made a fortune. He composed works for voice, piano and flute but they were all overshadowed by Haydn's music which was very much in vogue at the time. In 1802 Graeff married an English woman, in 1803 he became a denizen of England and lived out the rest of his life in London. Trübcher Music Publishing
