Birth
Charles Rudwick Graham was born on 18 February 1920 in Belfast, Ireland. He was the son of Samuel Graham, a constable with the Royal Irish Constabulary, and Mary Bothwell. His parents were living at 49 Farnham Street in Belfast, at the time of his birth. [1]
World War Two
Charles Rudwick Graham was in the British Merchant Navy in the Second World War. He was a Fourth Engineer Officer on the Tymeric.
At 08.15 hours on 23 November 1940, the Tymeric, carrying 6150 tons of coal, under Master Thomas Fraser, in convoy OB-244, was hit by a stern torpedo from U-123 and sank in flames after 17 minutes about 350 miles west-northwest of Ireland in the far North Atlantic. 71 crew members were lost. The master and four crew members were picked up by HMS Sandwich and landed at Liverpool. [2]
Memorial
Charles is commemorated at Tower Hill Memorial on Panel 112. The Tower Hill Memorial commemorates men and women of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who died in both World Wars and who have no known grave. It stands on the south side of the garden of Trinity Square, London, close to The Tower of London. [3] [4]
