Biography

John Grainger was born in 1851 in Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe, Yorkshire, England to George Granger and Ann (Dalby/Dolby) Grainger. His birth was registered in Thirsk, Yorkshire in the third quarter of the year.^[1]

In 1861 John Grainger (age 9, Scholar) lived at Mill Hill in Kepwick, Yorkshire with his father George (41, Blacksmith), mother Ann (39), and three siblings: Thomas (13, Ap), William (6, Scholar), and Jane (3).^[2]

In 1871 John Grainger (age 19, Farmer) lived in Ayton, Yorkshire in the household of his employer [and probably uncle] Richard Grainger (47).^[3]

John Grainger (of full age, Bachelor, Blacksmith, residing in Kepwick, son of George Grainger, Blacksmith) and Annie Hill (of full age, Spinster, residing in Kepwich, daughter of Robert Hill, deceased) were married on 18 Nov 1880 at the parish church of Over Silton, Yorkshire - the marriage was performed by Vicar John Oxlee, and the witnesses were John Hill & Elizabeth Hill.^[4] The marriage was registered in Northallerton, Yorkshire in the last quarter of the year.^[5]

John and Annie had six children:

In 1881 John Grainger (age 29, Blacksmith) lived in Kepwick with his father George (62, Blacksmith), mother Ann (52, Blacksmith Wife), wife Ann (25, Blacksmith Wife), and boarder John Dalby (67, Agricultural Labourer).^[6]

John's wife passed away in 1888.

John Grainger passed away in 1891, aged 39 years. His death was registered in Stockton, Durham in the first quarter of the year.^[7] He was buried on 14 Mar 1891 at Oxbridge Lane Cemetery in Stockton on Tees.^[8]
