Biography

Joseph Gratton was born in about 1685[1], possibly at Barlow in Derbyshire.[2]

On 2 February 1712/13 he married Jane Heywood at Chesterfield in Derbyshire.[2] They settled at Wingerworth and baptised several children there.

  • John (1713)
  • Joseph(1716)
  • Thomas (1718)
  • Elizabeth (1721)
  • George (1726)

Jane died in 1733 and Joseph married again on 16 June 1735, at Wingerworth, to a widow Margaret Watson. The wedding was by licence and the accompanying bond states that he was aged 49 and she 55.[3][1]

Joseph may have been a carpenter. A carpenter called Joseph Gratton took on an apprentice at Wingerfield in 1742, but that could be this Joseph or his son.[4]

Joseph died in 1763 and was buried at Wingerworth on August 21st.[5]

Research Notes

This profile was created for the father of Joseph Gratton but claimed he was a John Gratton born at Matlock in about 1695. There was such a person, and he did have a son Joseph, but that Joseph remained in Matlock and had no children.

A list of residents of Barlow levied in 1691 includes a Joseph Gratton.[6] He was assessed for 9d for "his farme at Brendwoodgate". That Joseph cannot have been born around 1685 but perhaps he was this Joseph's father or uncle.

The Barlow chapelry records have a gap from 1613-1699. The BTs start at 1685 but are not available on line.
