Biography

John, son of William GRAY and Hannah MAIDMAN, was born on 28 Dec 1815 at London, Middlesex, ENG.^[1] He died on 23 Jul 1896 at St. Louis, MO, age 81 of cancer of the tongue and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery, Centralia, IL.^[1][2][3]

Before 1850, at NY, John Charles may have married Hannah Jane GARFIELD (b. c1825; d. 6 Jun 1851; d/o Samuel Garfield and Lydia Hayward); child (surname GRAY):^[4]

The 1855 NY state census of Chautauqua County listed John C Gray (38, b. Eng, married, 13 yrs in this city, Daugarrian, native, owner of land) and Mary A (34, wife, b. City of NY, 6 yrs in city) along with Charles E Johnson (15, son, b. Chautauqua, 6 yrs in city), William S Johnson (11, son, b. Chautauqua, in city 6 yrs), John H Gray (2, son b. Chautauqua, 2 yrs in city), and Elizabeth Gray (8/12, daughter, b. Chautauqua, 8/12 in city).^[6]

The 1860 census of Jamestown, Chautauqua County, NY, listed John C. Gray (43, daguerreotypist, $2300 real estate, $1200 personal property, b. England) and Mary Gray (37, housekeeping, b. NY) along with their children John H 7, Bessie 6, Mary 4, and Winnie 2.^[7]

The 1865 NY state census of Chautauqua County listed John C Gray (49, b. Eng, 2 m. children, now married, artist, naturalized, owns land) and Mary A (44, wife, b. NYC, 7 ch, 2 married) along with John Henry (12, son, b. Chautauqua), Bessie (10, daughter, b. Chautauqua), Nellie (8, daughter, b. Chautauqua), Winnie (6, daughter, b. Chautauqua), Mary (1/12, daughter, b. Chautauqua), and a servant woman.^[8]

The 1870 census of Ellicott, Chautauqua County, NY, listed John C Gray (54, photographer, $500 personal property, b. England) and Mary W (59, k house, $3500 real estate, b. NY) along with their children John H 17, Bessie B 15, Mamie M 11, and Mary W 5.^[9]

The 1880 census of Ward 2, Centralia, Marion County, IL, listed John C. Gray (64, b. Eng, photo artist, parents b. Eng) and Mary W. Gray (wife, 59, b. NY, parents b. NY) along with their children John H 26, Bessie 24, Nellie 22, Winnie 19, and Mamia 15. They were next door to John and Lizzie Holt whose daughter married their son.^[10]

He was living with Helen 'Nellie' GRAY in 1896 at 4399 Forest Park Blvd., St. Louis, MO.10,11
