Railway Fatality at John's River.

Fettler Green Killed.

A fettler attached to the John's River district railway service was found with his head and left arm cut off on the line at mileage 258.3, near John's River, on Saturday morning last. His name was Henry Ormond Green, aged 50. At 4.30 a,m. Saturday Constable (First-class) Bond, Coopernook, received a telephone message from the railway station officer at Coopernook to the effect that a man had been killed by the Brisbane Express at John's River. Constable Bond immediately got in touch with the Coroner (Mr. Hubert Flett), who ordered the removal of the body to the morgue at Taree. Constable Bond then got in touch with the Manning Ambulance at Taree. On arrival of the ambulance at Coopernook, the driver of which was accompanied by Mr. J. McNaluara, traffic inspector at Taree, they proceeded to John s River. At the mileage stated above they found a body lying in the cess on the down (north) side. The body was decapitated, and the head was found lying some yards away. The left arm, which had also been severed, was also a few yards away. The body was recognised as that ot Henry Ormond Green, who had been a railway fettler at John's River. The deceased had been knocked by the 3.45 a.m. Brisbane Express, the engine driver of which (Driver Cochrane, of Kempsey), when he got to John's River, told the station master (Mr. Ward) that he had hit some thing in the cutting and asked him to go down aud see what it was. The stationmaster got a trolley, went down and found the body. He immediately returned and informed Ganger Atkinson that there was a body in the cut ting, and asked him to go down and take charge of it till the police ar rived. The ganger took two fettlers with him and they were left in charge while he (Atkinson) went and in formed a son of deceased of the accident. In the meantime the police arrived and the body was conveyed by ambulance to Taree. Deceased was a married man and his wife was gatekeeper at Emu Plains, a mile from Penrith, on the western Hue. An inquest was to have been held at Taree on Wednesday morning last. The late Mr. Green was a native of Coonamble. For about six years he had been stationed at John's River. He was acting ganger at Emu Plains before leaving there for this district. He also had at John's River a holding of a couple of hundred acres, which he converted into a conditional pur chase area in January. The building of a house is incomplete though he was living in the place. Mrs. Green had been coming up from Emu Plains three or four times a year, whilst de-ceased had been going to Emu Plains on his holidays. It was decided at Christmas time, when deceased had holidays that Mrs. Green would take up residence at the John's River holding in March. Mrs. Green was at John's River when her late husband met with a serious accident some 12 months ago whilst engaged in unloading sleepers from a ballast train at Coopernook and he was off duty for two months as a consequence. At about 7.20 a.m. on Saturday, Mrs. Green and daughter, Rita, arrived at John's River, it being their intention to spend a holiday with deceased. There, Mr. Ward broke the news to her, saying first of all that he had sent for her son. The widow, together with the daughter who accompanied her, will stay for two weeks with her brother, Mr. J. E. Plunkett, a chargeman at the Taree Loco Depot and who resides in Corn wall Street. Besides the widow the following members of the family are left: Laurie (John's River), Mrs. N. J,Phillips (Warrell Creek, near Macksville), Mrs A.V Hatter (Emu Plains), and Misses Alice and Rita Green (Emu Plains). One son, Thomas Henry, died in infancy at Botany. The funeral took place to the Dawson cemetery on Sunday, Rev. Father McDonell officiating. Mr. S'. A. Bridge had charge of the funeral arrangements.TROVE [1]
