Biography

James Greengrass was born in 1867 in Norwich. ^[1] In the 1871 census, his parents are listed as George and Elizabeth, both aged 29. ^[2] They resided in Heigham, Norfolk, England. Other children listed are Emily E (age 8), George F (5), and Rachel E (1). In the 1881 census, the children are listed as George (15), James (13), Christiana (8), William S (7), Lucy (5), and Albert (1). Emily, who would have been 18, may have been married and moved out of the houshold. ^[3]

In the 1901 England and Wales Census, he is listed as Head of Household, with wife Mary Ann. ^[4] His occupation is Gas Stoker. A Gas Stoker stoked the fire in a coal gas plant, which produced gas for heating and lighting from coal. ^[5]

1901 Census

There is no record of a Greengrass-Chamberlain marriage in the period 1880-1900, but the oldest child in the household (James, age 12) suggests a marriage in 1889 or before.

In the 1911 census, Mary CHAMBERLIN is listed as Head of Houshold, with children James (age 27) and Lucy (19) CHAMBERLIN, and George (14), Albert (8), and Gladys (3) GREENGRASS. ^[6]

1911 Census:

James Chamberlin's birth was recorded in 1890, with a "-" for the Mother's Maiden Surname, suggesting that it was also Chamberlin. ^[7] (His estimated birth year was 1884 in 1911, but 1889 in 1901.) There is no birth record of Lucy Chamberlin (or of James or Lucy Greengrass). The records for George, Albert, and Gladys Greengrass all list Chamberlin as the Mother's Maiden Surname. ^{[8] [9] [10]} Mary Ann and Alice Maud Greengrass both died in infancy. ^{[11] [12]} If this family in the 1911 Census is indeed the same as the one in 1901, then it suggests that James Greengrass had left the family between 1908 and 1911, and also that the younger James (and perhaps Lucy) was either born out of wedlock to Mary Ann or was from a previous marriage of Mary Ann's.

He died in 1920 in Norwich. ^[13] His will was recorded on 20 June 1920; this record gives his date of death as 20 May 1920, and the beneficiary as Mary Ann Greengrass. ^[14]
