He was born in 1708 in Halstead, Essex, the son of James Greenwood and his wife Mary Dow. [1]
John was first married to a woman named Mary, though I have not yet found this marriage. We know that the marriage happened, and that his wife's name was Mary through the baptism records of their children, and then John's later will, in which he leaves bequests to these children. [2] Mary died in 1748, being buried at the Quaker burial ground in Colchester, Essex on 7 Aug 1748. [3]
He married secondly, Rachel Tayspill at the Friends meeting house, Colchester, Essex on 24 Nov 1763. [4] Rachel was aged fifty at marriage and there were no children from the marriage. [5]
John died in 1767, being buried at the Friends burial ground at Colchester, Essex on 18 Oct 1767 (aged 59). Rachel was buried less than a month later in the same place, on 8 Nov 1767. [6] Rachel left a will as of Rachel Greenwood of St Nicholas, Colchester, widow, proved 30 Dec 1767. [7] John also left a will, written 1st Dec 1764, though not proven until 27 Dec 1768 (a year after Rachel's will was proved). [8]
