Richard Groocock was born in late 1837 to Elias Groocock and his wife, Elizabeth (born Stevens).

In 1861, Richard is a servant (gardener) in Town Close Hill, Hugglescote, Leicestershire.

By 1871 he is married To Mary Ann (born Gamble) and is a groom and gardener living in Knighton, Leicestershire with six children.

In 1881 the family have moved to Belgrave, in the registration district of Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire and have seven living children.
